The problem with how junk car pricing works
Ask what a scrap car is worth online and you mostly get a lead capture form wearing a calculator’s clothes. Your phone number buys you a figure, that figure arrives by phone, and it shifts again when a truck turns up. The seller never learns how any of it was calculated, which is precisely what makes the final drop so hard to argue with.
Knowing roughly what your car should fetch changes that conversation entirely. A yard quoting $180 on a vehicle carrying $400 of recoverable metal and converter is easy to walk away from, but only if you can see both numbers.
Where our figures come from
Nothing here is guesswork dressed as precision. Your car’s weight comes from manufacturer specifications, then gets priced against ferrous scrap rates that move daily on global steel demand. The converter is assessed independently because platinum, palladium and rhodium trade on their own markets. Vehicles carrying components with genuine resale demand earn a premium above that combined figure.
We publish the full method, and every output is described as a range. Anyone claiming to know your car’s exact worth without seeing it is guessing with more confidence than the situation allows.
The honest limits
Software cannot inspect a vehicle. Corrosion under the sills, a transmission that no longer engages, water damage from a storm three years ago, a converter someone removed in a car park last winter — a buyer standing next to your car will price all of that, and we cannot.
Nor do we purchase anything. No trucks, no yards, no payments. That distance is deliberate, since it means nothing on this site is shaded to make one particular buyer look better than the alternatives.
What we will tell you that others won't
Sometimes the useful answer costs us the visit. California’s retirement programme pays more than most yards will for a running car, so the California page says so. A missing converter cuts your offer harder than any other single factor, so that appears everywhere it’s relevant. Pennsylvania titles need notarising, Illinois junking certificates are permanent, New York fines you daily for cancelling insurance in the wrong order.
None of that helps us commercially. It’s the information a seller actually needs.
Keeping it current
Scrap prices move constantly and state rules change without announcement, so figures get reviewed and dated rather than posted once and forgotten. Where a number comes from a survey or a regional index rather than a firm quote, we label it that way.
